Morocco Approves Importation of Brazilian Buffaloes

Morocco's New Agricultural Import Policy

In a significant move to bolster its agricultural sector, Morocco has officially granted approval for the importation of live Brazilian buffaloes intended for slaughter. This announcement came from Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, highlighting a collaborative effort to enhance livestock quality and supply in Morocco. The decision is part of a broader strategy that aims to open up new markets and resume the export of various agricultural and animal products from Brazil to several countries, including Argentina and Peru, where additional agricultural seeds are also being imported.

Focus on Brazilian Livestock

According to the latest figures published by the Brazilian Association of Beef Exporters (ABIEC), Morocco has imported approximately 419 tons of Brazilian beef since the beginning of this year, a notable decrease from over 4,800 tons in 2025. The Moroccan Federation of Livestock Producers has emphasized that current livestock imports are predominantly sourced from Brazil, which stands as the primary supplier following a suspension of imports from European countries due to the outbreak of lumpy skin disease among the European cattle population.

In 2023, 37 companies contributed to the import of cattle destined for slaughter, with Brazilian imports accounting for over 90% of the total livestock brought into Morocco. The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries reported an average monthly import of around 24,000 heads of cattle, with considerable variations observed across different months. Notably, June and July saw imports exceeding 44,000 heads, while August and September recorded around 17,000. Recent developments in October indicate an uptick in import requests, particularly following the reopening of imports from the geographically closer Portuguese market.

This strategic decision to import Brazilian buffaloes aligns with Morocco’s goal to ensure a consistent supply of red meat in the national market while stabilizing meat prices for consumers. The cooperation between Moroccan and Brazilian agricultural authorities reflects a commitment to enhancing food security and agricultural sustainability in the region.
