Morocco Backs Emirati Diplomat Lana Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General Position

Morocco Endorses Lana Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General

In a significant diplomatic move, Morocco has officially endorsed Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, an esteemed Emirati diplomat, for the role of Secretary-General of the United Nations. This announcement was made by a representative from Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad in a statement released on October 25. The Moroccan government highlighted Nusseibeh's impressive qualifications and extensive professional background, asserting that she is an ideal candidate for this prestigious position.

Morocco expressed its belief that Nusseibeh's skills and vision will significantly contribute to enhancing the effectiveness and outreach of the UN, especially amidst the complexities of today's global landscape. The statement emphasized the necessity of strengthened multilateral cooperation to address international challenges effectively.

On October 26, Lana Nusseibeh took to social media platform X to express her heartfelt appreciation to Morocco for its support and trust in her candidacy. She echoed the Kingdom's vision on the importance of bolstering multilateralism and the role of the UN in maintaining international peace and security, underscoring the need for an efficient organization guided by its Charter.

Nusseibeh currently serves as the Minister of State for the United Arab Emirates and has been the UAE's permanent representative to the UN since 2013. During her tenure, she has presided over the UN Security Council twice during the UAE's chairmanship in 2022-2023 and has also led the Board of UN Women. Her candidacy, which was formally presented by the UAE on October 21, aims to succeed António Guterres, whose term concludes on December 31, 2026. Nusseibeh’s campaign focuses on conflict prevention, diplomacy, and reforms to enhance the UN's efficiency and accountability.

The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. A candidate must secure at least nine out of 15 votes from the Council, without the veto of any of the five permanent members, and subsequently gain majority support from the Assembly. If elected, Nusseibeh would make history as the first woman to lead the UN, a milestone that would reflect progress towards gender equality in global governance.
