Morocco to Establish a Gaming Hub and Foster Local Video Game Development
In a significant move to bolster its digital economy, Morocco has announced plans to create a specialized gaming zone in Rabat as part of its 2027 budget proposal. The initiative, outlined in the draft budget law presented by the government, involves an allocation of 460 million dirhams, aimed at positioning Morocco as a regional hub for the gaming industry. Of this budget, 160 million dirhams have already been earmarked for the ongoing development of this gaming area, though specific timelines and the companies that will be involved have yet to be disclosed.
This strategic investment aims to cultivate a robust ecosystem for video game development, bringing together studios, startups, and professionals in the field. Additionally, the government is set to implement the "Gamification Lab" program, in collaboration with CDG Invest, which will provide 10 million dirhams over three years to support Moroccan game studios in developing gamification solutions. This funding is intended to span from 2027 to 2029, highlighting the government’s commitment to nurturing the local gaming industry beyond a single fiscal year.
The establishment of this gaming zone and supportive measures reflects Morocco’s broader strategy to enhance its digital landscape. The government has previously hosted three editions of the Morocco Gaming Expo in Rabat, further demonstrating its dedication to integrating gaming, digital media, and new technologies into the national communication framework. This initiative is expected to attract investment, create jobs, and foster innovation within the country’s burgeoning gaming sector.
