Morocco's Significant Ammonia Imports from China
In the first nine months of 2026, Morocco imported approximately 75,060 tons of ammonia from China, as indicated by customs data compiled by the Energy Research Unit based in Washington. This dramatic shift towards Chinese imports coincided with disruptions in the global fertilizer and raw materials trade, particularly due to the ongoing Middle Eastern crisis and the disruption of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for ammonia and sulfur supplies.
The bulk of Morocco's ammonia imports from China occurred in May, positioning the country at the forefront of import destinations from China. Morocco relies heavily on imports to meet its entire ammonia demand, with around 40% of these imports originating from the Middle East.
Details of Morocco's Ammonia Imports
The value of Morocco's ammonia imports from China during the first nine months of the current year reached nearly $46.5 million. Data from the Chinese customs authority reveals that Moroccan imports were sporadic, with a notable spike in May. The Chinese shipments made their first entry into the Moroccan market in March, with quantities totaling 165 tons and a value of approximately $82,000.
As a result, Morocco ranked fifth among the largest importers of Chinese ammonia. By April, the imports surged beyond 5,000 tons, valued at $3.3 million, allowing Morocco to rise to the fourth position among importers. The most significant transformation occurred in May, when imports soared to 51,050 tons, worth $29 million, making Morocco the leading destination for Chinese ammonia. This month alone accounted for approximately 68% of Morocco’s total imports in the first nine months.
Following this peak, Moroccan imports of Chinese ammonia experienced a decline in June, recording 18,800 tons valued at $14 million, which lowered the country to the third position among major importers. After a three-month hiatus, Chinese ammonia supplies are set to resume in October 2026, with a new shipment estimated at around 30,000 tons of liquid ammonia heading to Morocco, as observed by the Energy Research Unit. This shipment was recently loaded at the port of Nanjing in Eastern China, marking the first journey in the international liquid ammonia transport line connecting the Chinese city to North Africa.
