Morocco's Aviation Industry Set for Export Boom Beyond $5 Billion

The aviation industry in Morocco is on the brink of a significant export surge, with projections indicating that exports could surpass $5 billion within the next two years, a substantial increase from approximately $3 billion recorded last year. This remarkable growth trajectory is largely driven by a combination of expanding investments, rising global demand, and Morocco's strategic shift towards higher value-added industrial and technological activities. As of August, the aviation sector has already achieved exports worth approximately 30 billion dirhams (around $3 billion), reflecting a year-on-year growth of about 21.5%, thus marking the best performance among the kingdom’s export industries, according to data from the Office of Foreign Exchange. Notably, the level of exports achieved during this period matches the total exports of the sector for the entire previous year.

Mohamed Belatiq, president of the Moroccan Aerospace Industries Association (GIMAS), noted in statements to Asharq Bloomberg that the sector currently encompasses around 150 companies, having expanded two and a half times over the past decade. This burgeoning industry also provides approximately 25,000 jobs, with women representing 40% of the workforce. Major players in the sector include global giants such as Boeing, Airbus, and Safran, all of which engage in manufacturing various aircraft components and assembling others. This positions Morocco as a pivotal link in the global value chain of the aviation industry.

Toufik Machrif, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, emphasized that Morocco has successfully built a robust industrial base in aviation over the past 25 years, benefiting from its strategic geographical location, internationally-standardized infrastructure, stability, skilled workforce, and a competitive and stable investment climate. He further stated that these factors have established Morocco as a trusted destination for an increasing number of global companies.
