Morocco's New Government Receives Confidence Vote Amid Promises of Economic Reforms

Morocco's New Government Gains Confidence from Parliament

In a significant political development for Morocco, the newly appointed government led by Fatima Zahra Mansouri received a vote of confidence from the Moroccan Parliament on Thursday. This vote came after a session where 204 deputies voted in favor of the government’s program, while 127 opposed it, out of a total of 331 deputies participating in the vote. This approval is a crucial step in formalizing the government's authority, as stipulated by Article 88 of the Moroccan Constitution, which requires a majority approval for the government program to proceed.

Government's Promises for Economic Reforms

During the parliamentary session, which was marked by intense discussions and exchanges of accusations between majority and opposition members, Mansouri presented her government's program. Among the key commitments made by the new government is the gradual increase of the minimum retirement pension to 3,000 dirhams per month, equivalent to approximately 306 US dollars. This move aims to enhance the living standards of retired citizens and address the pressing issue of inflation, with the government pledging to keep annual inflation rates at or below 2% to safeguard citizens' purchasing power.

Mansouri emphasized that the government plans to implement comprehensive reforms to the pension system in Morocco. She noted that these reforms would not merely involve adjusting the retirement age or altering contribution rates but would also include revising how pensions are calculated. The focus on pensions, inflation, and purchasing power highlights the major economic and social challenges that the new government intends to tackle. This parliamentary approval marks a constitutional milestone that lays the groundwork for the government to fulfill its commitments and initiate its planned reforms.
