Online Ads: A New Gateway to Gang Crime for Youth in Sweden

Online Advertising Lures Young People into Gang Criminality

Recent reports indicate a concerning trend in Sweden where online advertisements have become a significant pathway for children and adolescents to get involved in gang-related criminal activities. The National Operational Department (Noa) has conducted a thorough investigation into responses to these gang advertisements, identifying 72 individuals, primarily young teens, who have expressed a willingness to take on various tasks associated with these illicit groups.

These advertisements, often featuring cheerful emojis and promises of quick cash, entice minors into participating in fraudulent schemes. The tasks typically involve simple requests such as purchasing prepaid phone cards or lending out their bank accounts. However, the situation can escalate rapidly, as highlighted by Johan Olsson, the head of Noa. He emphasizes that once the gang leaders obtain a personal identification number, they may pressure the young individuals to engage in more serious crimes. This coercion can extend to threatening or pressuring their families, creating a cycle of intimidation and exploitation.

The list of identified young people has been disseminated to regional police departments throughout the country, with plans to reach out to the minors and their parents to address this alarming issue. The authorities are taking proactive steps to combat the infiltration of gang culture into the lives of Sweden's youth.
