Phuket Woman Victimized by Moroccan Man After Brief Romance on Dating App

Phuket Woman Falls Victim to Theft by Online Acquaintance

A disturbing incident has emerged from Phuket, Thailand, where a Thai woman reportedly lost over 140,000 baht in gold and cash after allegedly being robbed by a Moroccan man she met through a dating application. This shocking theft has raised concerns about the safety of online dating, particularly for individuals seeking relationships through social media platforms.

According to reports, the victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was in a relationship with the Moroccan man for a mere three weeks before the alleged theft occurred. The woman’s friend reached out to Phuket Times, urging them to publicize the story as a cautionary tale for others who might be engaging in online dating. The details of the theft, including the exact date and time, have not been confirmed, but the woman is said to have filed a complaint with the local police.

During the incident, the accused reportedly made off with a gold necklace valued at approximately 130,000 baht and around 8,000 baht in cash from the woman’s residence. In addition, he is accused of stealing an extra 4,000 baht from a Myanmar maid before fleeing the scene. The victim’s friend claims they have a photograph of the suspect, along with details of his passport, and they believe he has already left Phuket, although this information is yet to be verified by the police.

This incident has prompted Phuket Times to issue warnings about the potential dangers of meeting foreigners through social media and dating applications, highlighting a growing trend of scams and theft associated with online relationships. This cautionary approach is echoed by other reports of similar incidents in Thailand, where women have been defrauded by men they met online, often resulting in significant financial losses.
