Health Concerns Lead to Shellfish Harvesting Ban in Safi's Cap Beddouza
The Moroccan Ministry of Fisheries has officially announced a ban on the harvesting and commercialization of shellfish from the Cap Beddouza area, located within the maritime jurisdiction of Safi. This decision, which was enacted on Friday, comes in response to alarming findings from the National Institute of Halieutic Research (INRH). The analyses conducted in the region revealed the presence of marine biotoxins in mussels at unusually high levels, posing potential health risks to consumers.
Given these findings, the Ministry strongly advises the public to only purchase shellfish that are packaged and carry the appropriate health identification labels. These products should exclusively be sourced from authorized retail outlets, such as official markets. The ministry has warned that shellfish sold in bulk or by street vendors lack safety guarantees and could be hazardous to public health. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the well-being and safety of consumers while the area undergoes necessary environmental purifications.
