Saudi Leader Elected President of the Arab Parliament: A New Era Begins in Cairo

The Arab Parliament convened in Cairo, Egypt, on October 24, 2026, marking a significant milestone in regional governance as Saudi citizen Saad bin Sulaib Al-Otaibi was elected as its President for the next two years. This decision came during the procedural session held at the headquarters of the Arab League's General Secretariat, heralding the commencement of the third session of the fourth legislative term.

During this pivotal meeting, four Vice Presidents of the Arab Parliament were also elected, namely: Said Al-Saadi from Oman, Hisham Al-Hosari from Egypt, Ihsan Barakat from Jordan, and Abdel Salam Nasia from Libya. The election of these leaders underscores a commitment to collaboration and strengthens the parliamentary framework within the Arab region.

Upon his election, President Saad Al-Otaibi delivered an impassioned speech emphasizing the need for a renewed vision and more effective institutional work in the upcoming phase. He articulated a clear goal: to elevate the Arab parliamentary work from mere aspirations to tangible achievements, transforming ideas into actionable programs that yield measurable results. This shift is essential for enhancing the Arab Parliament's presence in both regional and international arenas while addressing issues of common Arab interest.

Al-Otaibi highlighted that collective Arab action is no longer a fallback option but a fundamental approach to ensuring the security of Arab states and safeguarding their interests. He called attention to the necessity of solidarity, cooperation, and the integration of efforts as crucial foundations for confronting the challenges faced by the Arab world today. This collaborative spirit is vital for enhancing the capability of Arab institutions to respond effectively and with greater impact to contemporary issues.

In addition to the election of the President and Vice Presidents, the session also saw the appointment of heads and deputies of the permanent committees. Following this procedural meeting, preparatory sessions for the Arab Parliament are scheduled, whereby final arrangements will be made for the new legislative term, which is set to officially commence next Monday at the Arab League's General Secretariat.
