Spain's Judicial Inquiry into Moroccan Military Vessel Movements Near Ceuta

Spain's Investigation into Moroccan Naval Activities Off Ceuta

In a significant development related to the ongoing maritime tensions between Morocco and Spain, the Spanish National Court, under the jurisdiction of Judge María Tardón, has formally requested the Ministry of Defense to provide detailed information regarding the movements of Moroccan military vessels in Spanish territorial waters off Ceuta. This inquiry is particularly focused on the period from July 29 to August 10, as part of broader investigations into the recent surge of migrants entering the Spanish enclave.

The judge's request encompasses crucial specifics, including the exact dates and times that Moroccan naval ships may have entered these waters, any recorded interactions or movements concerning the Spanish navy, and relevant maritime security operations in the area. Moreover, the court has sought to obtain any available audio or video recordings that could shed light on these activities. The inquiry also extends to assessing similar incidents that may have occurred since August 10, 2026.

It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and various ministers had previously acknowledged incursions by Moroccan vessels, yet precise details regarding these activities remain unclear. During this investigation, Judge Tardón has opted to dismiss broader investigative requests made by the organization "Justitia Europa," deeming them excessive at this juncture. She emphasized that the current evidence does not substantiate a direct link between the reported presence of Moroccan vessels and the influx of migrants.

Once the requested documents are reviewed, the judge will make a determination on whether additional measures are warranted, which could involve seeking the declassification of certain sensitive information.
