U.S. Military and Morocco Collaborate on Counter-Drone Technology in Tan-Tan

Strategic Collaboration for Enhanced Security

In a significant move towards enhancing military capabilities, the U.S. Army's Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) is set to conduct counter-drone technology tests in Tan-Tan, Morocco, in 2027. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to fast-track systems designed to protect troops from the growing threats posed by small, unmanned aerial vehicles, which have become increasingly prevalent in modern warfare. General Dagvin Anderson, commander of U.S. Africa Command, alongside Moroccan General Mohammed Berrid, underscored the importance of this collaboration during a site visit in May 2026, emphasizing the need for rapid deployment of effective anti-drone solutions within a tight timeframe of 180 days.

Countering Emerging Threats

Countering drones has emerged as the foremost innovation priority for Maj. Gen. Matthew Brown, who leads SETAF-AF. The military's focus on drone defenses is not unfounded; the recent conflicts, notably the Russia-Ukraine war, have demonstrated the devastating potential of drones, which have been utilized effectively by both state and non-state actors. The U.S. military recognizes the necessity of developing robust defensive measures against these relatively low-cost yet highly effective devices. The upcoming tests in Tan-Tan are part of a comprehensive effort to evaluate technology solutions from various suppliers, aiming to equip troops with the best resources available.

Morocco's strategic location and favorable training conditions present an ideal environment for these tests. The country has long been a vital U.S. partner in Africa, recently solidifying this relationship by signing an agreement with U.S. Africa Command to establish a training center by 2030. This center will not only include a drone academy but will also focus on developing and testing new systems under real-world conditions. The African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center in Tan-Tan is expected to play a pivotal role in preparing troops for a variety of operational environments.

In addition to the drone technology tests, the collaboration during the African Lion exercise in 2026 further exemplified the commitment to innovation. The exercise provided a platform for over ten vendors to integrate cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence and unmanned systems, into military operations. Such initiatives not only enhance military readiness but also foster a spirit of cooperation among African nations facing similar security challenges, such as terrorism and illegal trafficking.

The partnership between the U.S. and Morocco is set to yield significant advancements in military technology, with the goal of developing low-cost, adaptable solutions for countering drone threats across Africa. With ongoing evaluations and the establishment of innovative centers, both nations are poised to lead the charge in creating a safer and more secure environment in the region.
