Spanish Government Urges Caution in Accusations Against Morocco

Spanish Government Warns Against Unfounded Accusations Towards Morocco

The Spanish government has raised concerns regarding the potential repercussions of disseminating unsubstantiated accusations against Morocco, particularly in relation to the border territories. Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, emphasized the importance of maintaining healthy relations between Spain and Morocco, urging against the kind of rhetoric that blames the Kingdom for the migratory events occurring in Ceuta.

During an informative meeting organized by Nueva Economía Fórum in Madrid, Torres stated, "It is very easy to go against Morocco without evidence and to demonize a neighbor with whom we have a signed migration cooperation agreement." He pointed out that he has no evidence to support claims that a Moroccan Navy ship has thrown migrants into the sea, as suggested by certain political and media voices in Spain. He insisted that any such assertions must be backed by verified facts.

"We must defend our territorial sovereignty while also striving to maintain the best possible relations with Morocco from Madrid," Torres asserted, highlighting the delicate balance that must be struck in diplomatic relations.

Impact on Border Relations

Torres emphasized that the first entities to suffer from deteriorating relations with Morocco are the border territories themselves. He called for "rigor and responsibility" from both the media and political parties that blame the Kingdom without providing evidence. This statement underscores the need for a more measured approach in discussing sensitive issues that can have significant ramifications for both nations.

Furthermore, the minister criticized the Popular Party for altering its discourse depending on whether it is in power or in opposition. He warned that "some political leaders make very dangerous assertions," although he did not name specific individuals. In contrast, he presented the actions of the Spanish Government as being grounded in tangible efforts rather than mere rhetoric, stating, "We are focused on work, not on rhetoric."

Torres also rejected discourse that stigmatizes or dehumanizes migrants. He remarked, "The worst response to the migratory phenomenon is the labeling of individuals." He referenced how some parties have even employed terms like "hunting" migrants, while the Popular Party contends that individuals who entered Ceuta can be immediately returned. Torres countered this by explaining, "They cannot be returned overnight." This highlights the complexities of migration policy and the need for humane treatment of individuals involved.
