Support for Sahrawi Prisoners in Morocco: Álava's Initiative

Álava's Commitment to Human Rights for Sahrawi Prisoners in Morocco

In a significant move highlighting its dedication to human rights, the Provincial Council of Álava has approved a new initiative under the Alavés Mechanism for Advocacy and Protection of Human Rights Defenders (MAP). This program specifically aims to assist the families of nine Sahrawi individuals currently imprisoned in Morocco. The primary objective of this initiative is to facilitate the travel, accommodation, and support for the relatives of these individuals as they visit various penitentiaries where their loved ones are serving sentences.

The request for assistance was made by the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD), which has been allocated a budget of €8,000 for this initiative. The program will be executed in collaboration with Sahrawi organizations dedicated to human rights advocacy, ensuring that the families of those incarcerated receive the necessary support and companionship during their visits.

The imprisoned individuals are part of the Gdeim Izik group, a collective of Sahrawi human rights activists who have been deprived of their freedom for several years. Various United Nations bodies have raised concerns regarding the legality of these detentions, emphasizing the need to scrutinize the conditions of confinement that involve prolonged isolation and allegations of torture or mistreatment.

Moreover, the geographical dispersion of these prisoners across different facilities far from their homes makes it increasingly challenging for families to maintain contact and monitor their health. In this context, family support becomes crucial, as many of these families have been bearing the responsibility of providing care and companionship under particularly arduous circumstances for years.

The Alavés Mechanism for Advocacy and Protection of Human Rights Defenders is a vital tool promoted by the Department of Equality, Basque Language, and Governance of the Provincial Council of Álava. Its purpose is to respond swiftly to urgent situations affecting individuals and groups advocating peacefully for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Through this initiative, Álava aims to bolster protective measures linked to its international cooperation efforts and ensure that human rights defenders can continue their vital work under safer conditions.
