Morocco Sees Surge in Air Traffic with Over 26 Million Passengers in 2023

In a remarkable achievement for the Moroccan aviation sector, the country's airports welcomed more than 26 million travelers during the first eight months of the current year, reflecting a significant increase of 8.81% compared to the same period in 2022. This growth highlights the robust recovery of air travel in Morocco, which has been recovering strongly post-pandemic.

The National Airports Office of Morocco reported that international air traffic recorded an impressive rise of 8.82%, amounting to approximately 23.22 million passengers. Additionally, domestic air travel saw an increase of 8.76%, bringing the total to around 2.8 million passengers. This upward trend demonstrates the growing confidence among travelers in the safety and reliability of air travel in Morocco.

Among the busiest airports, Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca led the way with 8.25 million passengers, followed closely by Marrakech Menara Airport, which served around 7.23 million travelers. Agadir Al Massira Airport welcomed approximately 2.5 million passengers, while Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport recorded about 2.05 million. The Rabat-Salé Airport also contributed to this impressive figure, with a total of 1.7 million passengers, according to the Moroccan news outlet "Al-Omq".

The positive performance of international air travel was primarily driven by the robust recovery in the European market, which continues to be the main source of passengers, accounting for around 19.3 million travelers, marking an annual increase of 9.22%. Furthermore, the South American and North American markets, along with Africa, demonstrated strong performance, with increases of 33.5% to 71.7 thousand passengers, 13% to 689 thousand passengers, and 13.3% to 1.4 million passengers, respectively.

By the end of August 2023, Moroccan airports recorded a total of 190.3 thousand aircraft movements, which is a 9.72% increase year-on-year. Mohammed V Airport topped this activity with a total of 64.6 thousand movements, followed by Marrakech Menara Airport, which recorded 47.3 thousand movements, and Agadir Al Massira Airport with approximately 17 thousand movements. This surge in air traffic not only showcases the appeal of Morocco as a travel destination but also underscores the vital role of its aviation sector in supporting the economy and tourism industry.
