Major Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure
The Moroccan government has committed a substantial investment of approximately 1.1 billion dirhams for the reconstruction of the Hassan II Regional Hospital in Agadir. This initiative is a pivotal part of the national healthcare reform aimed at enhancing medical services within the region. Given that the hospital has been operational since 1961, the decision to modernize its infrastructure reflects the pressing need for facilities that meet contemporary healthcare standards.
On March 19, 2026, Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui, convened a meeting to discuss the details of this reconstruction project. The aim is to establish a modern hospital with a capacity of 415 to 450 beds, equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, particularly in emergency and oncology services. This upgrade is expected to significantly improve patient care quality and overall healthcare services in the region.
Temporary Closure and Patient Management
To facilitate the reconstruction process, the hospital will temporarily close at the end of March 2026. During this period, arrangements will be made for patient care to ensure continuity of services. Urgent cases, including pregnant women in labor and patients requiring hospitalization, will be redirected to the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir. Furthermore, routine consultations and examinations will be managed at the Day Clinic associated with the hospital, which has been specially equipped to serve patients under optimal conditions.
Health centers in the region will continue to guide and care for the population, ensuring that all healthcare facilities are coordinated and secure throughout this transition. Additionally, there will be a reorganization of healthcare personnel within the regional framework, ensuring their rights are fully protected during this restructuring phase.
