A Dark Week on Morocco's Roads: A Heavy Toll from Traffic Accidents
During the week spanning from August 3 to August 9, a staggering 45 individuals lost their lives, and 3,219 others sustained injuries, with 115 of these injuries classified as severe, resulting from a total of 2,341 traffic accidents registered in urban areas across Morocco. This alarming statistic underscores the pressing issue of road safety in the nation, prompting authorities to take a closer look at the contributing factors behind these incidents.
According to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security, the primary causes of these accidents have been identified, in order of severity, as driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, pedestrian inattention, excessive speed, loss of vehicle control, illegal lane changes, inadequate safety distances, failure to signal when changing direction, disregard for stop signs, driving on the wrong side of the road, ignoring red traffic lights, improper overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol, and driving in prohibited directions. These factors highlight the need for increased awareness and adherence to traffic laws among all road users.
In terms of enforcement and monitoring, security forces reported the issuance of 52,028 traffic violations and the compilation of 8,125 reports submitted to the judiciary. Additionally, a total of 43,913 fines were collected, amounting to 9,360,350 dirhams. Law enforcement also impounded 5,505 vehicles and confiscated 8,125 documents, while 565 vehicles were detained for various infractions. This enforcement effort demonstrates the commitment of authorities to improving road safety and reducing the frequency of such tragic events in the future.
