Enhancing Water Accessibility in Rural Morocco
The Regional Multi-Service Company of Casablanca-Settat (SRM) is stepping up its efforts to enhance access to drinking water in rural areas, particularly in the provinces of Sidi Bennour and El Jadida. The organization is directly managing projects worth nearly 44 million dirhams (MAD) to ensure that these regions receive reliable water supply, which is a critical need for local populations. This initiative is part of a larger program that aims to provide drinking water to 446 centers and douars throughout the Casablanca-Settat region, with a total investment of approximately 350.8 million MAD.
Strategic Investment and Project Development
This initiative is aligned with the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation (PNAEPI) for the years 2020-2027. The funding structure includes 245.6 million MAD from the Ministry of the Interior and an additional 105.2 million MAD from the General Directorate of Local Authorities. The program encompasses extensive studies, technical assistance, and land acquisition necessary for the successful implementation of these projects.
The SRM’s efforts are focused on several provinces within the region, including Settat, Berrechid, Benslimane, El Jadida, and Sidi Bennour. Specifically, the program addresses the drinking water supply for 25 centers with an allocation of 150 million MAD, the improvement of water delivery to populations in 341 douars with 150.8 million MAD, and the development of water points in 80 douars at a cost of 50 million MAD. The aim is to bridge the territorial disparities in access to potable water while bringing essential services closer to rural communities.
In Sidi Bennour, initiatives include enhancements across six centers, with a total budget of 35 million MAD allocated for the construction and upgrading of drinking water networks, elevated tank reservoirs, associated equipment, pressure stations, and individual connections. Presently, these projects are approximately 90% complete. Meanwhile, in El Jadida, the project involves equipping Sidi Hssein Ben Abderrahmane and six douars in the Ouled Hcine commune with a budget of around 8.6 million MAD, including the installation of 19 kilometers of pipelines and the construction of a 150 cubic meter elevated reservoir, which benefits about 1,200 households, or nearly 6,000 residents.
Through these initiatives, the SRM Casablanca-Settat is ensuring comprehensive operational management of the projects, from technical studies to the execution and monitoring of works, as well as administrative and financial oversight.
