Achraf Hakimi Faces Trial for Alleged Rape as World Cup 2026 Approaches

Achraf Hakimi Will Stand Trial in France Following Rape Allegations

In a significant legal development, the French judiciary has confirmed that Achraf Hakimi, the Moroccan football star and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defender, will face trial for alleged rape. The Versailles Court of Appeal has upheld the decision to proceed with a criminal trial, asserting that there are sufficient charges against the player stemming from an incident that allegedly occurred in 2023. This ruling comes shortly before Hakimi is set to play in the World Cup, where he will represent Morocco in a match against Scotland.

The court's decision reaffirms a previous ruling made by an investigating judge in February. Despite Hakimi's legal team appealing this decision, the court dismissed the appeal, which has led to widespread media coverage given the player's prominence in international football. Notably, Kylian Mbappé, Hakimi's teammate at PSG, may be called to testify during the trial.

According to reports, the allegations came to light after a 24-year-old woman claimed that Hakimi assaulted her at his residence on the outskirts of Paris. The woman reported that they met via Instagram in January 2023 and stated that she was invited to Hakimi's home, where the alleged incident occurred. She claimed that Hakimi acted without her consent, prompting her to send a message to a friend to come and pick her up. Following the incident, Hakimi was placed under judicial control in March of the same year.

The attorney representing the accuser has characterized the court's decision as a "judicial victory," providing relief and hope to her client after years of legal proceedings. The attorney highlighted the importance of the trial in addressing issues of sexual violence within the realm of men's football, emphasizing that the victim, referred to as Jeanne, seeks to have her voice heard in court.

Hakimi's Response and the Implications of the Case

In response to the court's ruling, Hakimi expressed his eagerness for the trial to commence, stating on social media that he has been waiting for this moment since the beginning and looks forward to finally speaking out. He described himself as an "easy target" and claimed that the case would not have progressed if he were not a public figure. His legal representative, Fanny Colin, criticized the decision and the alleged inconsistencies in the accuser's statements, asserting that there are exculpatory elements that should have led to the dismissal of the charges.

As the preparations for the trial unfold, the Versailles Court of Appeal has yet to announce a specific date for the proceedings to begin. There are speculations that Kylian Mbappé will be summoned as a witness, given his close friendship with Hakimi and their shared experiences during the events in question. Mbappé has already provided written testimony regarding conversations he had with Hakimi on the night of the alleged incident, wherein Hakimi mentioned intimate encounters but indicated that he did not perceive any rejection from the accuser.
