A Unique Educational Experience on Water Accessibility and Sanitation
In celebration of African Child Day, which focused on the theme "Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for all children in Africa," the Regional Multi-Services Company (SRM) of Casablanca-Settat organized an enlightening educational event on June 16. This initiative benefited a group of approximately twenty middle school students, aimed at raising awareness about the critical issues surrounding access to clean water and sanitation services across the African continent. Given that access to potable water and sanitation remains a significant challenge in many parts of Africa, this initiative is particularly relevant in Casablanca, Morocco's economic capital, where local authorities and service operators are actively engaging younger generations to foster understanding of these pressing issues.
During the event, students had the opportunity to visit the Bouskoura 85 water reservoir, a crucial infrastructure for the storage of drinking water in the metropolitan area. They also toured the "Eaucéan" wastewater pre-treatment station located in Sidi Bernoussi, a facility that plays a pivotal role in mitigating coastal pollution. Under the guidance of professionals in the field, the students received educational insights into the water cycle, covering everything from water collection in dams to its distribution to households, along with the various treatment stages involved. This immersive experience significantly enhanced their understanding of the mechanisms that ensure continuous access to safe drinking water.
The visit further encompassed the treatment of wastewater and the challenges associated with liquid sanitation. The students learned about the processes employed to minimize the environmental impact of wastewater discharges and to protect receiving environments from pollution. The day concluded at the educational gallery of the "Eaucéan" station, where participants could explore educational pathways and observe technical installations firsthand. Operational since 2015, this station processes domestic and industrial wastewater from the entire eastern zone of Casablanca, stretching from the port to Mohammedia.
Beyond the technical aspects, this initiative aimed to enlighten the youth on the importance of preserving water resources and promoting responsible water usage. This message aligns with a broader goal of establishing access to water and sanitation as a fundamental right and a crucial lever for sustainable development.
