Investment in Airport Infrastructure for Future Growth
The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the National Airports Office have recently signed a significant financing agreement in Casablanca aimed at enhancing and modernizing airport infrastructure across four key locations: Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fes. This strategic investment is part of a broader initiative to improve the capacity and efficiency of these airports, with a projected goal of accommodating 14 million passengers in Marrakech, 5 million in Agadir, 3.6 million in Tangier, and 3 million in Fes by the year 2030.
The modernization program encompasses the installation of cutting-edge security equipment, automated baggage processing systems, and innovative digital solutions to manage passenger flows effectively. Additionally, it will focus on updating air navigation systems and reinforcing security measures to ensure a safe and seamless travel experience for passengers. The signing ceremony was attended by Sidi Ould Tah, the President of the African Development Bank, and Nadia Fettah, the Minister of Economy and Finance, who underscored the importance of this initiative within the framework of the integrated transformation program for African aviation and Morocco’s national tourism strategy.
This funding comes at a time when air traffic has surged to 22.3 million passengers in the first seven months of the year, marking an 8.8% increase. Furthermore, the national airline continues to expand its fleet to meet growing demands. The four airports targeted by this investment handle a substantial portion of tourist traffic outside of Casablanca, and their current saturation levels have been identified as a significant constraint to hosting major sporting events in the future.
