African Development Bank Supports Morocco's High-Speed Train Project with €205 Million Loan

The African Development Bank has approved a substantial loan of €205 million (approximately $234 million) to Morocco, aimed at financing the expansion of the high-speed train network. This funding is particularly directed towards the construction of a new railway line that will connect Kenitra and Marrakech, alongside the modernization of the railway infrastructure on one of the busiest corridors in the country.

This financial support is part of Morocco's ongoing strategy to develop its rail transport system and enhance connectivity between major cities. This initiative is crucial not only for economic growth but also in light of the preparations for hosting the 2030 World Cup in partnership with Spain and Portugal. The project's objectives include improving the quality of transport services, reducing travel times, and increasing the capacity of the rail network, which will facilitate the movement of people and goods while also lowering carbon emissions.

This loan represents one of many financial partnerships that Morocco is securing to fund its ambitious plans to expand its high-speed train network, which includes extending the "Al Boraq" line to Marrakech, with future visions of further network expansions to other cities.

The African Development Bank's decision underscores the significance of infrastructure investments as a driver of growth, regional integration, and as a support mechanism for Morocco’s transition towards more sustainable and efficient transportation solutions.
