African Lion 2026: Agadir Hosts the Largest Multinational Military Exercise in Africa

Agadir Becomes the Hub of Military Operations

For two weeks, Agadir will serve as the central command for multinational military operations in Africa as the 22nd edition of the African Lion exercise officially commenced. The opening ceremony was held at the Southern Zone Headquarters, marking a significant advancement in the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States. Under the high directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Supreme Commander and Chief of General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, this large-scale operation will run until May 8, 2026, involving thousands of military personnel from various nations.

Strengthening Operational Capabilities and International Cooperation

The ceremony was co-chaired by Major General Mohammed Benlouali and Brigadier General Daniel Cederman, who outlined the key objectives of this edition, which focuses on enhancing operational capabilities and joint military cooperation. The military officials emphasized the strategic importance of the exercise, designed to improve coordination, interoperability, and responsiveness of the forces engaged in complex and evolving scenarios. The clear ambition is to build forces capable of effectively operating in multidimensional environments.

With over 5,000 military personnel from approximately 40 participating and observing countries, African Lion 2026 reaffirms its status as the largest military exercise in Africa. The maneuvers will take place across several strategic sites throughout the Kingdom, including Benguerir, Agadir, Tan-Tan, Taroudant, Dakhla, and Tifnit, combining land, maritime, and air operations both day and night.

This edition marks a notable technological advancement as well, integrating cyber warfare, electromagnetic warfare, and even outer space scenarios into the training exercises. The inclusion of unmanned aerial systems illustrates the evolution of military doctrines toward more hybrid and digitized formats.

Beyond its strictly military aspects, African Lion 2026 also encompasses humanitarian initiatives. Medical and social actions are planned, particularly in El-Faid in the Taroudant province, with a military field hospital and other activities aimed at benefiting local populations in Dakhla. Prior to the operational phase, an academic segment launched on April 20 and scheduled through April 30 allows participants to familiarize themselves with emerging technologies and operational procedures. This preparatory phase, structured around 20 specialized modules, lays the groundwork for command exercises and field simulations.

Thus, African Lion 2026 serves as a real-world laboratory where military innovation, international cooperation, and the enhancement of strategic capabilities converge, showcasing the strength of the relationships between Morocco and its partners, especially the United States.
