On Tuesday, the African Naval Forces Summit commenced in Rabat, organized by the Royal Moroccan Navy in collaboration with the U.S. Naval Forces in Europe and Africa (NAVAF) and the U.S. Marine Corps Forces in Europe and Africa (MARFORAF). Admiral George W. Weikoff, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe and Africa, remarked that the 2026 edition of the African Naval Forces Summit reflects a collective commitment to strengthening and safeguarding maritime security at the regional level. He pointed out that maritime threats have far-reaching regional and global consequences, necessitating a collaborative approach to address the challenges targeting global maritime security. His comments underscored the importance of enhanced defense systems based on partnership and innovation.
Admiral Weikoff further stressed the significance of the summit in providing a forum for participants to discuss necessary capabilities improvements and the means to be developed, which would contribute to bolstering maritime security on both regional and global scales. Meanwhile, General Daniel L. He acknowledged the persistence of numerous challenges, such as various forms of illicit trafficking, illegal fishing, and violent extremism, despite recent developments in the region. General Shipley concluded by stating, "Our goal through this gathering is to strengthen partnerships, enhance regional cooperation, and support efforts aimed at serving security, peace, and prosperity."
