The African Union (AU) has recently made a significant move in its diplomatic efforts by appointing Moroccan diplomat, Ambassador Fathallah Sijilmassi, as its new Special Envoy for G20 and Global Affairs. This strategic appointment was announced by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and is aimed at enhancing the engagement of the 55-member continental organization with key international decision-making bodies. The goal is to ensure that Africa's priorities are effectively represented on global governance platforms, which is crucial for the continent's development and integration into the world economy.
In his new role, Sijilmassi will collaborate closely with the AU G20 Sherpa and established governance structures to coordinate African positions on pressing global challenges. His responsibilities will cover a wide array of critical issues, including the reform of international financial architecture, sustainable development initiatives, trade relations, climate change action, and advancements in technology. Sijilmassi brings a wealth of experience to this position, having previously served as the Director General of the AU Commission, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, and Morocco’s Ambassador to both France and the European Union.
This appointment comes on the heels of a landmark achievement for the AU, which became a permanent member of the G20 during the New Delhi Summit in 2023. This status not only enhances Africa's institutional voice in international economic discussions but also paves the way for the effective implementation of the AU's Agenda 2063 strategic framework, which aims for a prosperous and integrated Africa.
