Africa's Monumental Museum Set to Open by Late 2027

A New Cultural Beacon in Africa

The long-anticipated African Continent Museum is on track for completion, with an official opening scheduled for the last quarter of 2027, according to Mehdi Qotbi, the president of the National Museum Foundation. This monumental project, which has already surpassed 85% completion in its structural phase, aims to position Morocco as a significant cultural hub within Africa. As construction progresses, plans for interior design and exhibition spaces are set to be initiated soon, marking an exciting new chapter for the museum's development.

Transforming Rabat's Cultural Landscape

Located in the historic former headquarters of the Royal Navy in central Rabat, the museum is strategically positioned opposite the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. This prime location will create a unique museum complex that is unprecedented in both Morocco and Africa. Designed by architect Adrien Laforgue, the museum is undergoing a meticulous transformation that seeks to honor its historical exterior while innovating its interior spaces to meet modern standards. With an overall budget of 342 million dirhams and an expansive area of over 13,000 square meters, complemented by a subterranean gallery, the museum is poised to become a central feature in the African cultural landscape.

Beyond its architectural significance, Qotbi emphasizes the museum's mission to narrate the diverse stories of Africa through an immersive exhibition experience. The thematic focus will cover a wide array of topics, from African ecologies and diasporas to the collective memories of slavery and migration narratives, ultimately providing a contemporary and multifaceted perspective of the continent. The inaugural exhibition will blend archives, interactive installations, and artistic creations to enrich visitor engagement and understanding.

With a substantial collection of artworks already in place, the National Museum Foundation is well-prepared to launch a rich programming schedule upon the museum's opening. This facility will not only feature exhibition spaces but also include artist residencies, training centers, and secure conservation areas, reinforcing its role as a cultural and scientific platform.

Envisioned as a vibrant and accessible space, the museum will also encompass gardens, cafes, and gathering areas, fostering community interaction and cultural exchange. Its direct underground connection to the Mohammed VI Museum will further enhance the cultural coherence of Rabat's center, establishing the capital as a pivotal destination for contemporary African culture. As construction progresses towards completion, the African Continent Museum is set to emerge as one of Morocco's most transformative cultural projects.
