Agadir and Essaouira: Top Spring Destinations for German Tourists in 2026

As travel trends evolve for 2026, Morocco is capturing the attention of German tourists, with Agadir and Essaouira leading the charge as preferred spring destinations. The Tourism Observatory reports a remarkable 29% increase in German visitors to Morocco in 2024, totaling 361,116 arrivals. This upward trajectory is expected to continue, reinforcing Morocco’s status as Africa’s premier tourist hotspot, which welcomed nearly 20 million visitors in 2025.

Essaouira, a coastal gem, has notably surged in popularity, securing the second spot on Skyscanner's trending destinations list for German travelers, with a staggering 724% increase in search interest from the previous year. The city is celebrated for its UNESCO-listed medina, ideal surfing conditions, delectable seafood, and laid-back bohemian vibe, making it particularly appealing to younger German adventurers who seek experiences beyond the traditional package holiday.

Meanwhile, Agadir remains Morocco's flagship beach resort, drawing in German tourists eager for a sun-soaked getaway combined with the natural beauty of the Anti-Atlas Mountains. The Regional Tourism Council of Agadir Souss-Massa has set an ambitious target of attracting 150,000 German visitors by 2025, a significant rebound from the low figures recorded during the pandemic, although still shy of the 300,000-plus arrivals seen in the 1990s.

To enhance its appeal in the German market, Morocco's national tourism office is diversifying its offerings. The focus is shifting from a purely beach-centric approach to a more holistic experience that encompasses cultural immersion, adventure activities, gourmet dining, and eco-tourism. The improvement in air connectivity, including direct flights to Agadir, Marrakech, and Essaouira, is facilitating easy travel for Germans wishing to explore independently.

Despite the increase in arrivals, the German market still holds significant untapped potential. Currently, the average stay for a German tourist in Morocco is three nights, markedly lower than the seven nights typically spent in Spain or six in Turkey. To address this disparity, Morocco is working on creating competitive all-inclusive packages and enhancing resort infrastructures, aligning with its Tourism Roadmap for 2023-2026. With the 2030 FIFA World Cup approaching, co-hosted by Morocco, interest from European tourists, including Germans, is poised to escalate even further.
