Ban on Mussel Harvesting and Sales in Agadir
On September 17, 2026, the Moroccan State Secretariat in charge of Maritime Fishing officially announced a comprehensive ban on the harvesting and commercialization of shellfish products from the designated shellfish farming area of Tamri-Cap Ghir, located in the Agadir region. This prohibition will remain in effect until the environment in the area is fully purified. The decision follows alarming results from analyses conducted by the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH), which revealed the presence of marine toxins in mussels at levels exceeding acceptable standards.
In light of these findings, the Secretariat has urged consumers to purchase only packaged products that carry health identification labels and are sold in authorized retail outlets, such as official markets. The release emphasized that shellfish sold in bulk or by unlicensed vendors lacks any guarantee of safety and poses a significant public health risk. The authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of seafood products and protecting consumer health, particularly in light of the potential dangers posed by contaminated shellfish.
