Agadir Launches First High-Level Bus Service: A New Era in Urban Mobility

Introducing the Amalway TRAMBUS in Agadir

The city of Agadir has officially inaugurated its first line of the High-Level Bus Service (BHNS), named the "Amalway TRAMBUS," in May 2026. This groundbreaking initiative, co-financed by the French Development Agency, marks a significant advancement in urban mobility within the Souss region. It is part of a comprehensive Urban Development Program (PDU) aimed at enhancing public transportation in the area.

Led by the local development company Agadir Mobilité, this project is the result of a strong institutional partnership involving the Ministry of the Interior, the Souss-Massa region, the Grand Agadir Territorial Collective for Transport and Urban Mobility (GATMU), and the Agadir municipality, alongside various public and institutional stakeholders committed to transforming the capital of Souss.

Features and Benefits of the Amalway TRAMBUS

The "Amalway TRAMBUS" project is distinguished by its adherence to international quality standards. With dedicated lanes that ensure regularity and a high frequency of service even during peak hours, passengers can enjoy a secure and comfortable travel experience. Enhanced safety measures are in place, including a permanent video surveillance system at stations and on board, while the modern, air-conditioned vehicles are designed to be accessible for individuals with reduced mobility.

Technically, the first line spans a strategic route connecting the port of Agadir to the Tikiouine neighborhood. Key components of the project include the establishment of 35 modern stations, the construction of a cutting-edge maintenance and storage facility, and the complete revitalization of urban facades and green spaces along the route. Additionally, a real-time passenger information system and electronic ticketing have been integrated to provide a seamless user experience.

Beyond enhancing mobility, the Amalway TRAMBUS project serves as a catalyst for urban renewal. The implementation of this service has led to the beautification of the cityscape, with major roadway renovations, wider sidewalks, and the introduction of new green spaces. This transformation not only boosts Agadir's appeal as a tourist destination but also reclaims public space for pedestrians, fostering a more aesthetically pleasing and harmonious urban environment.

To optimize transportation efficiency across Greater Agadir, a particular emphasis has been placed on intermodality. The BHNS line is designed to function as the backbone of the network, seamlessly connecting with existing bus lines and future exchange hubs. This integration facilitates smooth and rapid transfers for users, enhancing access to employment centers, educational institutions, and recreational areas.

The financing of this ambitious project stems from a collaborative effort involving several stakeholders, including the Transport Reform Support Fund (FRAT), the Souss-Massa region, the Agadir municipality, and the French Development Agency (AFD). The development of this world-class infrastructure has benefitted significantly from the financial and technical support provided by AFD, which plays a crucial role in aiding Agadir's transition towards sustainable and decarbonized mobility.

This partnership exemplifies international confidence in Morocco's urban modernization strategy and underscores a shared commitment to reducing carbon footprints while improving the quality of life for residents. "The BHNS of Agadir embodies what we aim to achieve through our funding at AFD: mobility projects that tangibly enhance the lives of residents while supporting the low-carbon transition of cities. This project represents one of the most concrete and structural achievements in our long-term partnership with Moroccan public stakeholders over the past three decades," stated Catherine Bonnaud, AFD Director in Morocco.
