Agadir Welcomes Global Experts for the 28th Crocodile Specialist Group Congress
In a historic first for North Africa, Agadir is set to host the 28th World Congress of the Crocodile Specialist Group (GSC) from May 11 to 19, 2026. This prestigious event, organized under the auspices of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is anticipated to attract around 300 researchers, experts, and specialists from all five continents to the Souss region's capital.
Crocoparc Agadir has been selected as the venue for this biennial congress, following a rigorous selection process conducted by international bodies, which highlights its commitment to global scientific networks and its growing role as a platform dedicated to ex-situ conservation and the study of reptiles. The previous editions of the congress were held in Mexico (2022) and Australia (2024), making this event a significant milestone for Morocco.
Focus on Conservation and Collaboration
The congress will revolve around the theme "Crocodilians in an Anthropogenically Altered World: Conservation, Challenges, and Solutions," and will cover the latest advancements in population genetics and ecology, the welfare of species, and the pressures exerted by human activities on natural habitats. Beyond its scientific focus, this congress aims to strengthen international cooperation among experts and institutions while showcasing Morocco's efforts in environmental protection and its integral role in global conservation networks.
The program will feature a variety of activities, including plenary sessions, specialized workshops, scientific presentation sessions, and a day dedicated to veterinary aspects. Additionally, excursions and networking opportunities will be organized to enhance collaboration among participants from around the world.
In addition to scientific discussions, the event will also highlight Morocco’s natural history. An exhibition showcasing fossils, organized in collaboration with the OCP Group, will illustrate the millennia-long presence of crocodiles in Morocco, providing international experts with a comprehensive perspective on the evolution of these species, from paleontology to future challenges.
