Reconstruction of Hassan II Hospital in Agadir
The Hassan II Regional Hospital in Agadir is set to undergo significant reconstruction as part of a broader initiative aimed at reforming the healthcare system in Morocco. The current facility, which has been in operation since 1961, no longer meets modern standards for infrastructure and patient care. The Ministry of Health has announced that the hospital will temporarily close at the end of March 2026 to facilitate this major renovation project. To ensure the continuity of care during this period, alternative arrangements are being put in place for patients.
This reconstruction project, which is estimated to cost approximately 1.1 billion Moroccan dirhams (MMDH), will not only enhance the hospital's capabilities but also significantly improve the quality of healthcare services available to the local population. The new facility will be built on the existing site and will feature a state-of-the-art, four-story building designed to accommodate between 415 and 450 patients. Advanced medical equipment will be integrated into the new hospital to provide high-quality medical care.
During a meeting chaired by Amine Tehraoui, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, alongside Said Amzazi, the wali of the Souss-Massa region, the importance of this project was emphasized as a crucial step in bolstering regional healthcare services. The new hospital will also enhance emergency services, including the SAMU (Service d'Aide Médicale Urgente) and oncology departments, thereby addressing critical health needs in the region.
In anticipation of the hospital's closure, the Ministry of Health has developed a detailed plan to ensure that patients continue to receive necessary medical attention. Urgent cases, deliveries, and hospitalizations will be redirected to the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir, while routine consultations and tests will be conducted at a designated day clinic specially prepared for this purpose. Health centers in the region will also remain active in guiding and managing patient care throughout this transition.
The Ministry has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a high level of healthcare service during the reconstruction phase and has mobilized all regional health structures to operate in an organized and secure manner. This initiative aims not only to meet the immediate healthcare needs of the population but also to lay the groundwork for a modern hospital that aligns with the expectations of residents in the Souss-Massa region. Furthermore, the Ministry expresses its gratitude to the public for their understanding and cooperation as this vital project unfolds.
