Agadir Welcomes a State-of-the-Art Laboratory for Fisheries Research
In a significant development for the fisheries sector, Agadir has inaugurated a new laboratory under the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH), marking a strategic investment of 13 million dirhams aimed at enhancing quality control and traceability of marine products. Located in the Haliopolis Park in Drarga, this facility is part of the Qualipôle initiative and is designed to align local standards with international requirements, thus bolstering the competitiveness of a regional industry that encompasses 116 processing units and provides employment for over 43,700 individuals.
Enhancing Compliance and Market Access
The laboratory's establishment is part of an overarching strategy to improve the compliance rates of products intended for export. By functioning as a certification and traceability body, it aims to mitigate economic losses resulting from sanitary non-conformities. This proactive analytical approach not only secures the market position of businesses in the Souss-Massa region but also maintains high food safety standards, thereby enhancing international buyers' confidence and reinforcing the Moroccan brand image in global markets. The laboratory, with a functional area of approximately 580 square meters, is equipped with cutting-edge scientific instruments that facilitate advanced physicochemical and microbiological analyses essential for maintaining sanitary quality oversight.
Furthermore, the inauguration of this facility coincides with a multi-institutional "one-stop shop" approach aimed at streamlining processes for economic operators. The signing of three partnership agreements during the inauguration, involving INRH, the Haliopole competitiveness cluster, the Freezing Association, and the Souss-Massa Promotion Cluster, highlights a commitment to fostering an innovative ecosystem. This collaboration positions Agadir as a national benchmark for applied research, facilitating technological transfer to the fisheries sector.
The strategic location of the laboratory in Agadir is justified by the area's dense industrial fabric, which includes 116 marine product processing units that serve as a major economic driver. The fisheries sector alone generates 43,700 jobs in the region, with 27,100 positions in onshore industrial activities and 16,430 in marine jobs, underscoring the importance of this new quality control facility in securing a vital economic activity that supports the livelihoods of thousands of families while contributing significantly to the regional GDP. Overall, this initiative reflects a long-term vision focused on food sovereignty and the development of a sustainable blue economy, reinforcing public commitments to the sustainable management of marine resources and the control of the entire fisheries value chain.
