Agadir's Remarkable Growth in Tourism
Agadir, a prominent coastal destination, has showcased its growing appeal in the first half of 2026, marking a significant milestone by surpassing 3.1 million overnight stays. This surge can be attributed to various factors, including an increase in British visitors, a robust domestic market, and the expansion of high-end hotel offerings. According to reports from Les Inspirations Eco, the region experienced a notable rise of 5.56% in arrivals and 8.54% in overnight stays compared to the same period in 2025.
From January to June, a total of 732,372 tourists chose Agadir, generating 3.145 million overnight stays. This performance is complemented by an increase in the average length of stay, which has extended from 4.18 to 4.29 days. Such metrics indicate a positive trend for the profitability of the hospitality sector within the region.
One of the primary drivers of this growth has been the enhancement of the premium accommodation offerings. The inauguration of two new establishments, namely the Grand Dominium and the Marriott Resort Taghazout Bay, has aligned with the rising demand for luxury accommodations. Consequently, five-star hotels have emerged as the primary beneficiaries of this trend, reporting a remarkable increase of 32.05% in arrivals, which equates to over 203,000 visitors, while their overnight stays soared by 34.90%. In contrast, vacation villages and club hotels experienced a decline of 15.40% in visitor numbers, reflecting a gradual shift in consumer preference towards higher-quality services.
This upward momentum has also led to an improvement in the average occupancy rate of tourist establishments, which reached 65.83% during the first six months of the year. When analyzing the source markets, the United Kingdom has solidified its position as the leading international market for Agadir, with over 182,000 visitors contributing to more than one million overnight stays. British tourists also tend to extend their visits, with an average stay of 5.69 days.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan market remains the second-largest contributor in terms of arrivals, hosting over 180,000 visitors, albeit with shorter stays. French visitors showed a slight decline in arrivals, but an increase in overnight stays by 6.24% indicates a lengthening of their visits. Additionally, growth from Polish and German tourists has continued to gain momentum.
Despite a quieter June, characterized by modest growth of 0.76% in arrivals and 3.06% in overnight stays, the outlook for the upcoming summer season remains optimistic. Professionals in the sector believe that sustaining this growth will require revitalizing mid-range segments and tourist villages, which have not performed as strongly.
Strategic Insights for Future Growth
The impressive performance of Agadir reflects a shift in tourist demand towards longer stays and higher-value accommodations. By elevating the quality of its offerings, Agadir has managed to enhance revenue per visitor and strengthen its competitive edge as a tourist destination. For Moroccan operators, the challenge lies in navigating this transformation without compromising the mid-tier segments, ensuring a diverse range of options that can cater to both domestic and international clientele.
