Ajax Targets Moroccan Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi
Ajax Amsterdam, the renowned Eredivisie outfit, is reportedly making a move to sign Azzedine Ounahi, the standout midfielder from Morocco who has captured attention during the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 26-year-old player has been a vital asset for both his national team and his club, Girona, showcasing his skills and determination on the pitch. Ounahi notably shone in Morocco's 3-0 victory over Canada, scoring two goals and consistently threatening from midfield throughout the tournament.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Ajax has expressed keen interest in acquiring Ounahi, who is currently under contract with Girona until 2030. His contract includes a release clause set at €25 million, a figure that Ajax is currently unable to meet outright due to financial constraints. Consequently, the Dutch club is engaging in negotiations to potentially lower the transfer fee, hoping to secure Ounahi's services without triggering the full release clause.
If the transfer goes through, it would mark a significant reunion for Ounahi, who would be reuniting with Michel, his former manager at Girona, who took the helm at Ajax in June. This move could also see Ounahi join the ranks of other former Girona players at Ajax, including Daley Blind, who recently returned to the club on a free transfer.
Ounahi, who has earned 55 caps for the Moroccan national team, made the switch to Girona in the summer of 2025 after a successful stint at Olympique Marseille, where he was instrumental in helping Morocco reach the semifinals of the World Cup, the first African nation to achieve such a feat. During his time at Girona, Ounahi participated in 25 matches, scoring five goals and providing two assists, although the team ultimately faced relegation from LaLiga.
