Akhannouch Leads First Board Meeting for Health Group in Fès-Meknès Region

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in the city of Fès, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch presided over the inaugural board meeting of the regional health group for the Fès-Meknès region. This meeting is part of the ongoing national initiative to establish regional health groups, in line with the royal directives aimed at reforming the national health system. Akhannouch emphasized the significance of activating the regional health group as a crucial step toward enhancing regional health governance, making healthcare services more accessible and effective for the citizens, while improving coordination among various health institutions within the region.

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the Fès-Meknès region within the national health system, noting that it is home to approximately 4.5 million residents, which constitutes around 12% of the national population. The region also has a significant rural population, representing about 36% of its inhabitants. This demographic reality makes it imperative to enhance spatial justice in access to healthcare and to prioritize the proximity of health services to the populace.

Akhannouch urged all stakeholders and relevant parties to intensify their efforts and expedite the completion of projects aimed at constructing and upgrading regional and provincial hospitals, which fall under the emergency plan to strengthen health provisions and bring services closer to the community. The Fès-Meknès region boasts 427 primary healthcare facilities and proximity services, in addition to a health network that includes five university hospitals and 14 regional and provincial hospitals and proximity centers, including the Hassan II University Hospital in Fès.
