Tragic Traffic Accident Statistics in Morocco
Recent reports reveal a harrowing week on Moroccan roads, with 45 fatalities and over 3,200 injuries resulting from a staggering 2,341 traffic accidents occurring in urban areas between August 3 and August 9, 2026. Among the injured, 115 individuals suffered serious injuries, highlighting the critical state of road safety in the nation.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) attributes these alarming statistics to a variety of factors, primarily focusing on driver inattention, failure to yield right of way, pedestrian negligence, excessive speed, and loss of vehicle control. Furthermore, additional causes contributing to these incidents include unauthorized lane changes, neglecting to maintain a safe distance, failing to signal when turning, running stop signs and red lights, driving on the incorrect side of the road, improper overtaking, driving under the influence, and operating vehicles against the flow of traffic. Such a broad spectrum of infractions underscores the need for enhanced road safety measures and public awareness campaigns.
In response to these incidents, Moroccan law enforcement has ramped up traffic regulation enforcement. During the same week, security services registered a staggering 52,028 traffic violations. They subsequently submitted 8,125 official reports to the public prosecutor's office and collected 43,913 amicable fines, resulting in an impressive total revenue of approximately 9,360,350 Moroccan dirhams from these fines alone. Additionally, authorities seized 5,505 vehicles, confiscated 8,125 driving licenses, and issued immobilization orders for 565 vehicles, aiming to mitigate the ongoing traffic crisis.
