Algerian-French Citizen Sentenced to Prison for Digital Defamation in Morocco

The criminal court at the Marrakech Primary Court condemned an Algerian citizen holding French nationality to one year of effective imprisonment on Monday evening. The sentence comes after the public prosecutor pursued charges against her for disseminating digital content that included defamation and insults directed at Moroccan citizens, as well as slander and disrespect towards a public institution governed by law.

Authorities previously apprehended the individual at Marrakech Menara Airport while she was preparing to leave the country on a flight to France. This arrest was executed in accordance with a national arrest warrant issued as part of an ongoing judicial investigation overseen by the competent public prosecutor.

Additionally, the accused had earlier uploaded videos and content on her social media accounts that included statements deemed offensive to Moroccans, along with direct accusations against public officials of bribery and preferential treatment while performing their duties related to traffic law enforcement.

Morocco has established laws, and there is no tolerance for insults and defamation. An apology would have been a better alternative than resorting to offensive statements. What one sows, one reaps; those who insult others must face legal consequences. Insults only lead to problems, and everyone must take responsibility for their words. Respecting the country and its people is an obligation, and mutual respect is essential for all. Freedom of expression does not equate to insult.
