Algerians Arrested in Marrakech for Counterfeit Currency
On the evening of August 16, 2026, officers from the 19th police precinct, supported by the research team from the 4th security district in Marrakech, apprehended two Algerian nationals in their twenties. They were suspected of possessing and distributing counterfeit foreign currency notes. The incident unfolded when a delivery driver received a call to deliver an order to a luxury residential complex in the tourist region of "Prestigia." After completing the delivery, the suspects opted to pay with foreign currency.
Upon attempting to cash the foreign notes at a local bank to verify their authenticity, the driver was met with rejection as the bank's systems flagged the currency as counterfeit. This prompted the driver to report the incident directly to the relevant police precinct. In response, the police swiftly moved to the suspects' residence, where the pair attempted to flee upon noticing the approaching officers. However, a well-coordinated response from the police allowed them to apprehend the fugitives before they could escape.
In a related development, sources indicated that the Royal Gendarmerie in the "Tahanaout" area had also received a complaint regarding the circulation of a counterfeit €20 note, strongly believed to be linked to the same suspects. Following their arrest, the two individuals were taken to the precinct to complete the official arrest report, before being transferred to the judicial police department in Marrakech for further investigation under the supervision of the competent prosecutor's office. This investigation aims to uncover all actions attributed to the suspects, identify the source of the counterfeit currency, and explore the potential networks involved in this illegal activity.
