Ali Lmrabet Placed in Police Custody Following Arrest at Tangier Airport
Prominent journalist and columnist Ali Lmrabet has been placed in police custody in Casablanca amid an ongoing investigation into alleged defamatory, insulting, and outrageous digital content. This announcement was made by the public prosecutor's office, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations against him.
Lmrabet was apprehended upon his arrival from Spain at Tangier Airport on Sunday, based on multiple search warrants previously issued against him. According to a statement from the King’s prosecutor at the correctional court in Casablanca, the investigation focuses on a series of online publications that reportedly contain defamatory and insulting remarks aimed at individuals and institutions, as well as disrespectful comments regarding legally recognized entities.
Following directives from the public prosecution, Lmrabet has been transferred to the headquarters of the National Brigade of Judicial Police in Casablanca, which is tasked with conducting the investigation. The prosecutor's office stated that Lmrabet's custody is conducted under their supervision, ensuring full compliance with procedural guarantees established by law, as well as maintaining the principle of presumption of innocence.
Before any judicial actions can be determined, Lmrabet will be questioned regarding the accusations against him. Ultimately, the prosecutor's office will decide on the appropriate legal actions following the completion of the investigation. Lmrabet, who holds dual nationality in Spain and France, is well-known for founding the satirical magazine Demain and for his political commentary on Moroccan affairs disseminated through social media platforms.
