On May 18, 2026, Aminatou Haidar, a renowned Sahrawi human rights defender and the president of the Sahrawi Body Against the Moroccan Occupation (ISACOM), arrived in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital. Her visit is part of an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the Sahrawi cause and highlighting the alarming human rights violations occurring in the Moroccan-occupied regions of Western Sahara. This engagement underscores the ongoing struggle for justice and autonomy that Sahrawi citizens face.
During her stay, Ms. Haidar is set to engage in a series of meetings and discussions with various civil society representatives in Slovenia. The focus of these dialogues will revolve around the dire human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, recent developments in human rights advocacy, and the implications of the stalled United Nations peace initiatives on the rights and welfare of Sahrawi people. Through these discussions, Ms. Haidar aims to shed light on the urgent need for international attention and action regarding the plight of the Sahrawi population.
Joining Ms. Haidar on this important mission are notable figures including Hamdi Omar, the Polisario Front representative in Slovenia, and Sennia El Bashir, the Polisario Front’s representative in Sweden and Norway. They will also be accompanied by a group of dedicated Slovenian supporters who are active members of the Slovenian Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, further illustrating the growing international solidarity with the Sahrawi cause.
