Moroccan Drivers Set to Benefit from Fuel Price Decrease

As of midnight on May 1, 2026, vehicle owners in Morocco can breathe a sigh of relief as fuel distribution companies have confirmed an impending reduction in fuel prices. This significant development marks the first price adjustment downward since the escalation of the crisis in the Middle East, which had previously led to a series of price hikes over the past few weeks. According to reliable sources from Le360, the price of diesel is set to decrease by approximately one dirham, bringing it down to around 14.50 dirhams per liter from the current rate of 15.50 dirhams observed at stations in downtown Casablanca. Similarly, gasoline prices are expected to fall by about 1.10 dirhams, resulting in a new price of roughly 14.40 dirhams per liter.

Context of Price Fluctuations and Government Response

This price adjustment comes following a period of intense pressure on fuel costs, with diesel witnessing a cumulative increase of over 4.70 dirhams per liter since the onset of geopolitical tensions. Gasoline prices have also surged by approximately 3 dirhams, significantly impacting household purchasing power. In response to these challenges, the government recently announced the renewal of direct and exceptional support for professionals in the transportation sector, following a meeting focused on assessing the international tensions' effects on the national economy. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of energy price fluctuations on logistical costs and ensure service stability.

Moreover, this decrease aligns with rising calls from the Competition Council for a reform of the pricing mechanisms. The Council has criticized the practice of bi-monthly collective reviews, arguing that it does not align with competitive market principles. It urges industry players to adopt more independent and flexible pricing strategies that foster genuine competition and allow for quicker responses to market changes, ultimately benefiting consumers.
