Arctic Talent: A Baritone's Unique Journey from Opera to Karaoke

Discovering the Unexpected Path of an Operatic Baritone in Iqaluit

In a remarkable blend of cultures and musical styles, the classically trained baritone, Fahd Errand, is captivating audiences in Iqaluit by infusing the traditional art of opera into the lively atmosphere of karaoke nights. At venues such as the Storehouse Bar & Grill and Chartroom Lounge, Errand's performances have become a delightful surprise for many patrons who might not expect to hear opera amidst popular sing-alongs. "I didn’t choose opera; opera chose me," he reflects, sharing the story of how his journey into music began at a young age in Casablanca, Morocco.

Errand's introduction to opera was as unconventional as it gets: while playing an intense online video game at just eight years old, he was enchanted by the game's soundtrack, featuring the powerful voice of renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti singing _E Il Sol Dell’ anima_. This early exposure to opera ignited a passion that would take years to fully blossom. "It took me 15 years to know that song," he recalls, illustrating how music can weave its way quietly into our lives long before we consciously embrace it.

Fast forward to the summer of 2013, Errand, having moved on from gaming, was immersed in language classes where he met a charismatic peer who inspired him to explore music more deeply. Despite intending to pursue a career in Arabic pop music, he found himself enrolled in an opera class by his teachers at the conservatory. Initially surprised, Errand quickly developed a fondness for the genre, dedicating himself to vocal training while still balancing his school life.

As he transitioned from a casual interest to a serious commitment to opera, Errand's talent flourished. His new vocal coach played a pivotal role in this transformation, pushing him to refine his skills and expand his vocal range. By 2020, just as he was ready to showcase his talent publicly, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, forcing him to postpone performances. However, resilience shone through as he and his peers formed an association to resume public performances once restrictions eased, allowing him to step confidently into the spotlight.

Errand’s journey eventually led him to Canada, where he balanced his studies in business administration with his passion for singing. His work experiences, including a role in the food industry, introduced him to the vibrant community of Iqaluit, where he currently works as a chef at the Frobisher Inn. Despite lucrative offers to perform at events in Ottawa, Errand chose to embrace a new chapter in Nunavut, where he could share his love for opera with local audiences.

This Valentine's Day, Errand enchanted diners with a special operatic performance, showcasing his ability to bring a touch of elegance and surprise to the karaoke scene. Whether singing heartfelt classics like _Ave Maria_ or contemporary hits by artists such as Celine Dion, he encourages others to believe in themselves quietly and authentically. "If you are believing in yourself, just believe in quiet — don’t shout it out. Surprise the people," he advises, embodying the spirit of an artist who continues to bridge the gap between traditional opera and modern entertainment.
