Argentina's Facundo Tello to Officiate France vs Morocco Quarterfinal: A Controversial Choice

Facundo Tello: The Controversial Referee for the France vs Morocco Clash

The upcoming quarterfinal match in the World Cup, featuring France and Morocco, has ignited discussions amongst football fans, particularly regarding the officiating. Following the selection of French referee François Letexier for the Round of 16 match between Argentina and Egypt, fans of the Albiceleste expressed their discontent. In a twist of fate, FIFA has appointed Argentine referee Facundo Tello to oversee the highly anticipated quarterfinal between France and Morocco, which has left many French supporters feeling provoked. This appointment is especially notable given the intense rivalry that has developed between France and Argentina since their memorable clash in the finals of the 2022 World Cup.

On July 7, FIFA announced that not only would Tello serve as the main referee, but the entire officiating crew would consist of officials from Argentina. This decision has stirred feelings of resentment among French fans, who perceive it as an unwarranted provocation in a match already steeped in competitive tension. Dayot Upamecano, a defender for France, emphasized the team's focus, stating, "I don't concentrate on who the referee is. I've never done that. We want to win this match; that's all that matters." Similarly, Robin Risser, the team's third-choice goalkeeper, remarked that the players should avoid paranoia and concentrate on their performance, asserting, "If these referees are here, it’s because they are at the level of this competition. We need to focus on what we can control to advance to the next round."

Facundo Tello's Impressive and Controversial Refereeing Career

Facundo Tello, hailing from Bahia Blanca in Buenos Aires, boasts a robust resume as a professional referee with over 434 matches officiated. Renowned for his willingness to issue penalties, Tello has accumulated a staggering number of disciplinary actions throughout his career, including 2,032 yellow cards and 75 red cards. His penchant for handing out cards was notably on display during the 2022 Argentine Champions Trophy, where he issued an astounding ten red cards in a single match, which included seven after a mass brawl at the end of the game.

Tello's experience extends beyond the domestic scene; he has also officiated internationally, including the prestigious Copa Libertadores final in 2024. This World Cup marks Tello's second appearance, as he previously refereed three matches during the 2022 tournament, including a quarterfinal match that saw Morocco triumph over Portugal with a score of 1-0. This victory remains a cherished memory for Moroccan supporters as they prepare to face Tello once more in their encounter with France.

Interestingly, this will be the first time the French team will compete under Tello's watchful eye in an international match, having never crossed paths with him before this quarterfinal. Tello nearly missed out on this opportunity due to an injury sustained while officiating a play-off match between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Jamaica earlier this year. Fortunately, medical examinations revealed no serious injuries, allowing him to be fit for this crucial encounter.
