Armenia's Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan
During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Armenia has openly expressed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan concerning Western Sahara. This significant endorsement was articulated by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, who characterized the plan as a pathway to enhance the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco. This statement came following a meeting between Mirzoyan and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, where they discussed not only the autonomy plan but also broader avenues for bilateral cooperation.
In his remarks, Mirzoyan highlighted a letter from Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed to King Mohammed VI, emphasizing Armenia's commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Pashinyan’s letter conveyed a message of support for Morocco’s initiative presented to the United Nations back in April 2007, which Armenia regards as a realistic political solution to the ongoing Sahara issue. He noted that the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, represented a pivotal advancement in the resolution process, promoting Morocco’s territorial integrity and fostering peaceful coexistence among the region’s peoples.
This endorsement from Armenia not only strengthens Morocco's position on the international stage but also reflects a growing recognition of its sovereignty claims over Western Sahara.
