A suspect has been apprehended in connection with the theft of cash from several players of the Super Falcons at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, as the team prepared for the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). According to reports from PUNCH Sports Extra, the individual has confessed to the crime and is expected to return the stolen funds while facing criminal charges. The incident occurred on the last day of Nigeria’s training camp in Casablanca, just before the team transitioned to Rabat for their Group C matches.
The Super Falcons commenced their WAFCON 2026 preparations on July 15 in Mohammedia, later relocating to Rabat, where they will remain during the group stage. Midfielder Esther Okoronkwo took to social media to reveal that she, along with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, were among the players who fell victim to the theft. Okoronkwo reported that over $1,000 was taken during the incident and criticized the hotel for its inadequate response, claiming that staff members were unhelpful when the matter was raised.
Following the players’ public outcry, Nigerian journalist and former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh announced that significant progress had been made in the case. He confirmed that a suspect was arrested in relation to the theft incident and that a full restitution would be made to the affected players as the legal process unfolds. Despite the unsettling circumstances, the Super Falcons are now focused on their tournament endeavors, with head coach Justine Madugu preparing the team to kick off their campaign against Malawi at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday. The Super Falcons, who are the record 10-time African champions, will also compete against Zambia and Egypt in Group C as they aim for their 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
