ASEAN Bazaar and Cultural Festival: A Celebration of Diversity
The Royal Thai Embassy was the proud host of the ASEAN Bazaar and Cultural Festival in Rabat on Saturday, marking a significant occasion as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) celebrated its impressive 59th anniversary. The event was a vibrant showcase of cultural heritage, bringing together the diplomatic missions of ASEAN member states such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. This year’s festival not only highlighted the rich tapestry of Southeast Asian culture but also served as an inviting platform for Moroccan visitors eager to explore the diverse traditions and customs of these nations.
Strengthening Ties Through Cultural Exchange
Thailand’s Ambassador to Morocco, H.E. Fabio Chinda, expressed enthusiasm about the festival, noting that this was the second edition of the ASEAN Bazaar following last year’s successful event held in Morocco. He highlighted the festival’s dual purpose of showcasing the unique cultures of ASEAN countries while also providing an opportunity for Moroccans to connect with the embassy and its representatives. In a gesture of goodwill, part of the proceeds from the festival will be donated to charity, continuing a tradition established in the previous year.
Indonesia’s Ambassador to Morocco, H.E. Yuyu Sutisna, echoed this sentiment, stating that the cultural festival followed an official ceremony celebrating ASEAN’s anniversary. He emphasized the importance of such events in bridging the gap between ASEAN countries and the Moroccan populace, stating, “We prepared many foods from Indonesia, special cuisine, souvenirs, music, and dance. This is being held to bring us closer to the people of Morocco.”
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in Morocco, Monty Labong Ludan, remarked on how the festival served to strengthen connections beyond the diplomatic sphere. He noted, “As we celebrate the 59th anniversary of ASEAN this year, the ASEAN Cultural and Food Festival is a good way for us to be closer to Moroccan society. It is also a valuable tool for fostering relationships with the international community here in Morocco.”
In recent years, Morocco has actively sought to enhance its relationships with ASEAN member states through various avenues, including diplomacy, trade, and cultural exchanges. Numerous Southeast Asian embassies in Rabat frequently collaborate on joint initiatives, while Moroccan officials have pursued stronger economic partnerships with countries in the region. Just earlier this month, Moroccan Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira visited Jakarta, where he engaged in discussions with Indonesian officials and representatives from ASEAN aimed at expanding trade and investment opportunities. Furthermore, Morocco has received an invitation to participate in the Philippines Investment Summit scheduled for November 2026, underscoring the growing ties between Morocco and Southeast Asia.
