Audrey Werro Secures Another Victory at the Diamond League Finals
On Saturday, in the thrilling finals of the Diamond League held in Brussels, Swiss athlete Audrey Werro clinched yet another victory in the 800 meters, narrowly defeating Dutch competitor Femke Broders-Bol with a time of 1:54.75. This remarkable performance adds to Werro's impressive track record this season, as she successfully triumphed in all six Diamond League races she participated in, including events in Rabat, Stockholm, Paris, Lausanne, and Zurich. Her victory in Brussels marks her second Diamond trophy, following her success at the Weltklasse last year.
Despite showing signs of fatigue due to the rigorous schedule of races toward the end of the season, Werro did not manage to break her Swiss record, which she set just ten days prior at the Letzigrund with an exceptional time of 1:53.70—ranking as the third-fastest performance of all time. Nevertheless, Werro crossed the finish line just ahead of Broders-Bol, who clocked in at 1:54.81.
Reflecting on her achievement, the 22-year-old athlete expressed pride in her performance, stating, "This trophy is different from last year's. Last year, it was a surprise to win, but tonight it was a goal. I felt a bit more pressure as I had to defend my title. I am very proud to have succeeded." In this final, another Swiss competitor, Veronica Vancardo from Fribourg, also made an impressive showing, finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:58.66, just shy of her personal best by 46 hundredths of a second.
Angelica Moser Shines in Pole Vault
In the pole vault event, Zurich's Angelica Moser secured a commendable second place behind American athlete Hana Moll. Moser, a double European champion in 2024 and 2026, demonstrated her consistent performance throughout the Diamond League season, successfully clearing 4.80 meters on her first attempt. Although she faced challenges at heights of 4.86 meters and 4.91 meters—attempts that would have set a new Swiss record—her performance was nonetheless impressive.
On the 200 meters track, American sprinter Kenny Bednarek lived up to his favorite status by finishing in 19.62 seconds (wind: +0.8 m/s), matching his best performance of the year achieved in Zurich the previous week. He finished ahead of South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile, who clocked in at 19.89 seconds, and Zimbabwe's Makanakaishe Charamba, who finished in 19.99 seconds. Swiss athlete Timothé Mumenthaler, a bronze medalist from the European Championships in Birmingham, finished in seventh place with a time of 20.52 seconds.
In the 5000 meters race, Dominic Lobalu also struggled to secure a podium finish. The athlete from LC Brühl fell behind the leading pack before the final lap and completed the race in 12:56.07. The race was ultimately won by Bahraini runner Birhanu Balew, who finished in 12:45.70.
