Austrian Support for Moroccan Sovereignty in the Sahara Region
On Wednesday, Austria publicly expressed its backing for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), indicating that the proposal for genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty may present a viable solution to the ongoing regional conflict concerning the Moroccan Sahara. This endorsement was articulated in a joint communiqué that emerged from a meeting held in Vienna between Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, who was visiting Austria for discussions.
The communiqué highlighted Austria's approval of the adoption of Resolution 2797, which underpins the initiatives led by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy. The resolution aims to foster negotiations based on Morocco's autonomy proposal, seeking to achieve a fair, durable, and mutually agreeable resolution to the Sahara dispute. Austria also acknowledged Morocco’s openness to elucidate the potential framework for genuine autonomy under its sovereignty, reinforcing the idea that constructive dialogue is essential.
Moreover, Austria's declaration is seen as part of a broader international trend that increasingly supports Morocco's claims to sovereignty over the Sahara and its autonomy initiative, particularly under the guidance of King Mohammed VI. This momentum has been notably bolstered following the adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which has further solidified the international community's perspective on the issue.
