Government's Initiative to Control Livestock Markets
In an effort to implement government measures aimed at regulating livestock markets and safeguarding them from unscrupulous intermediaries, local authorities in the city of Fes have taken decisive action. On Wednesday, they arrested five intermediaries, commonly referred to as "shanaqa," in the sheep market located in the Bensouda area. These individuals are suspected of engaging in illegal price manipulation regarding the sale of Eid sacrifices.
According to informed sources, this operation was initiated after authorities observed that the arrested individuals were deliberately obstructing farmers and livestock producers entering the market. They pressured these farmers to purchase sheep and livestock at significantly lower prices, only to resell them at exorbitant and unjustified price hikes, which severely strain the purchasing power of local families.
This rigorous enforcement action aligns with the recent directive issued by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, which explicitly prohibits intermediaries and speculators from reselling sacrificial animals within markets across the kingdom. The initiative aims to curb all manifestations of speculation to ensure price stability and protect consumers.
Local committees in Fes, supported by public security forces, have mobilized to maintain order and safeguard consumers from greed. Their objective is to facilitate direct commercial transactions between farmers and consumers, ensuring that the observance of Eid al-Adha occurs under stable and transparent conditions.
