From Flea Market Finds to Musical Innovation

In a serendipitous encounter at Casablanca's Derb Ghallef flea market in 2004, Franco-Moroccan DJ and producer Aziz Konkrite stumbled upon a box of nearly two hundred Moroccan 45s that had been overlooked by many. The box, deemed worthless by its previous owner, would eventually serve as the cornerstone of his groundbreaking project, Siba Sawt-System. For Konkrite, these records weren't just mere artifacts of the past; they unlocked a treasure trove of memories from his childhood, evoking images of family gatherings and lost loved ones. He describes these records as 'sonic locks' that opened doors to forgotten experiences, prompting him to embark on a transformative journey across Morocco. Traveling by motorcycle, he sought out local musicians and studios to connect with the living traditions behind the music.

The Evolution of Siba Sawt-System

Drawing on a diverse mix of genres like Chaâbi, Aïta, Reggada, and Gnawa, Konkrite skillfully weaves these rural styles into his work, merging them with contemporary hip-hop techniques such as sampling and field recordings. His debut album, Siba Sawt-System #1, was released in November 2023, encapsulating fifteen years of musical exploration into seven tracks. A follow-up album, Siba Sawt-System #2, is set to release in June 2026, with a thematic focus on continuity and honoring the memories of those who have passed. This October, Konkrite is set to showcase his innovative sound at the Club Summit during WOMEX 2026 in Las Palmas, marking his first appearance at a major world music conference.

In a recent interview, Konkrite shared insights into his creative process and the significance of his music. He views Siba Sawt-System as an instrument for communication, one that allows listeners to engage through multiple sensory pathways—be it the music, visuals, or storytelling. His approach emphasizes an immersive experience, allowing audiences to lose themselves in the layers of sound and imagery he creates. As he prepares for WOMEX, Konkrite expresses excitement about connecting with fellow artists and industry professionals, emphasizing the importance of genuine relationships and unexpected encounters in the music world.
